European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other legal developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
