RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
