Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
