The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Western Australia.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.
"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.
The selector indicated that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Backup Options
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
